Brian has always been ruthless and he's always looked after himself.
He's had to.
He's the oldest of the triplets and it's his job to look after everyone.
At least, that's what he's always told himself.
When he finds a tourist camping on one of the private beaches, he tells her to get lost. He thinks that's going to be the end of things, but then she shows up in his office claiming to be the writer who is crafting a story about him.
Brian just has one question for the little human: why is she sleeping on the beaches when she could be sleeping in his arms?
For every girl who has ever dared
to love.
Prologue
From the epilogue of NAUGHTY DRAGON
Brian stood in his office and walked to the window that overlooked the city. Oh, it was beautiful, but he couldn’t relax. He couldn’t calm himself down enough to enjoy what he was seeing. That had always been his problem, hadn’t it? He’d always considered himself to be the big brother of the group. That was stupid since they were triplets. They were literally all the same age. Still, he’d felt a sort of pressure to perform.
He’d always felt like it was his job to make sure that everyone else was okay. Recently, it seemed like that was all he did. He took pride in the fact that he cared for his brothers, but now he wondered what cost it had been at.
Declan and Christopher were both very happy with their mates. Zoa was incredible, and she’d been a wonderful asset to their company. Her accounting skills truly were fantastic. Christopher’s mate was a sweetheart, too. The fact that they all worked together hadn’t been detrimental to the company at all. In fact, it had seemed to make the organization flow even more smoothly.
Now, as Brian looked out of the window, he wondered whether or not things were ever going to look up for him. He was a busy man. He was too busy to find a mate. He always had been.
His phone rang, and he reached for it. He didn’t bother looking to see who was calling. He simply swiped his finger across the front and answered.
“Hello?”
“Hey,” the voice on the other end of the line was smooth and sultry. Instantly, he pulled the phone back to see who was calling him, but the number was blocked. Weird.
“Can I help you?” Brian asked, all business. It was late for someone to be calling him with a work-related issue, but it wasn’t unheard of.
“Actually, that’s what I’m calling about. I hope that you can. My name is Winter, and I’m a writer with Dragons Daily.”
“The tabloid?” Brian was irritated. Why the hell would a tabloid writer call him on his private line? A better question would be how she even g
ot his number in the first place.
“No, that’s Dragonette Daily,” the woman said calmly. “It’s a common mistake. Don’t worry.”
He wasn’t worried, and the idea that he might be worried was a bit grating. Who the hell was this woman? Why did she want to interview him?
“Dragons Daily is a nationwide newspaper for shifters.”
“Does it come out every day?”
“Yes,” she said, “but I’m writing for a special edition. We’re doing a huge special on dragon-owned businesses and we’d like to cover Monster Brothers Security. I was wondering if I’d be able to set up a time to come interview you in person and to talk more with you about your company.”
The woman sounded...sweet. Professional. Businesslike. Brian was always a bit wary around females because he never really knew what to expect. It was his own prejudice, he knew. He was worried that someone would try to come after him for his money. He feared that someone might try to hurt him or his brothers if he wasn’t cautious enough.
This woman seemed...
Well, she seemed kind of interesting. Besides, Brian wasn’t the kind of dragon to turn down free advertising, was he? He’d learned long ago that if you could get people to write about your business, people would pay attention. The average client could see an ad about your organization and care less, but the more exposure they had to your organization, the more you could build up your reputation.
That meant a greater sense of trust, and considering the fact that they ran a security company, that was pretty important to Brian. Yes, he thought that meeting with the reporter might be a good idea. He could get together with her and talk about his company, and that would be that. They could meet for coffee. No, they could meet in his office.
“I’m intrigued,” he said, and the woman laughed. Oh, he liked the sound of that laugh. He didn’t even know what she looked like, and already he knew that he liked her laugh. How weird was that?
“Good,” she said. “How about next week? Monday morning?”
“Monday at noon,” he said. “We’ll have lunch in my office. I trust you know where our headquarters is?”
“I know,” she said. “See you next week, Brian.”
The woman ended the call, and Brian stared at his phone. He rolled her name around on his tongue. Winter. It sounded like the name of a fairy or a pixie. It sounded like the name of a girl who knew what she wanted, and who wasn’t afraid to try.
He liked that.
Brian sat down in his chair and spun around, once more looking out of the window. This time, the lights seemed to sparkle a little bit more, and this time, his heart seemed a little bit lighter.
This time, Brian thought that maybe, just maybe, things were about to start looking up.
Chapter 1
“Mr. Monster, can I offer you some coffee?”
The woman standing in Brian’s doorway was holding a damn tray filled with coffee and cookies, but she was shaking so badly that the entire tray threatened to spill all over the office floor.
He sighed when he looked over at her. He hated how the poor woman was so scared to be there.
Was she scared of dragons?
Or was she just scared of him?
“You can set it on the side table,” Brian jerked his head toward the table, and then he turned back to his computer.
He had a busy day full of errands and meetings and client problems to deal with. Then he was going to go back to his house, have a glass of whiskey, and jerk off all night. After the week he’d had, he deserved it. That was what Brian thought. He thought he deserved to have a good orgasm – or orgasms – before bed.
The woman in his office now was cute and perky and nervous as hell. She was a shifter, just as Brian was. Only, instead of being a fierce dragon, she was a little cat: a kitten, to be precise. Brian didn’t mind cat shifters when they were big. Lions or tigers were perfectly fine to be around, but a kitten?
Well, she had some problems, and being skittish was only one of them.
“Savannah, stop freaking out,” Brian finally said, but it was the wrong thing to start with because she did, in fact, freak out. Savannah jumped and the contents of the tray spilled everywhere. There was a clatter, and the puddle of coffee started to spread across the floor.
“I’m so sorry,” she shrieked. Then she shifted into her cat form and stood there on the ground, surrounded by a pile of clothes. She poofed out her body. Her fur stood upright. Even her tail was up and poofed out. She was the ultimate definition of a scaredy cat.
“It’s fine, Savannah,” Brian sighed.
She was his new assistant slash secretary. The three Monster brothers shared an assistant who could do things like manage their schedules and help them deal with clients. Their last assistant, McKenzie, had developed an unhealthy crush on Brian and had caused a reign of chaos around the office. They were all glad that McKenzie was gone; however, Savannah was a handful.
“What’s going on?” Allison, Brian’s sister-in-law, walked into the room. “I thought I heard a crash.” Allison took one look at Savannah in kitten form and burst out laughing. Then she reached down and picked the kitten up, stroking her head. “Did you get scared?”
“I’m afraid that was my fault,” Brian admitted sheepishly. His brothers knew he was a harsh guy. They’d never accused him of being nice. Still, he hadn’t meant to scare Savannah. He had just been warning her to be careful.
“She’s new, Brian. You have to be nice to her.”
“I was trying,” he sighed.
“It’s not your fault.” Allison held the kitten up, so they were face-to-face. “Brian’s last secretary was a crazy bitch, so he’s edgy as hell. Come on. Let’s go back to my office and you can get dressed there.”
Allison collected Savannah’s clothing and headed out of the office. Brian breathed a sigh of relief, glad that he wouldn’t have to deal with the awkwardness of Savannah trying to shit back and get redressed right there. As a shifter, he wasn’t exactly weird about nudity, but having his secretary get dressed in his office was a bit much, even for him.
“Mops are in the hall closet,” Allison called over her shoulder. Then she was gone, and Brian was left alone. He got up and headed over to the closet to grab a mop. It was going to be a long day, and it was only mid-morning.
What else could possibly go wrong today?
“Trouble in paradise?” Declan, Brian’s brother, showed up.
“For fuck’s sake,” Brian growled. “What is this? Everyone-Go-Talk-to-Brian Day?”
“Calm down, little brother.”
“I’m not your little brother. We’re triplets. We’re the same age. Besides, I’m a few minutes older than you.”
“Hmm, seems like Mr. Dragon woke up on the wrong side of the treasure pile,” Declan said. “What’s going on?”
“Savannah spilled the coffee and snacks.”
“Yeah, that’s because she’s scared of you.”
“I caught that.”
“You should be nicer,” Declan nodded. “That’ll help.”
“Cool, thanks for that information,” Brian snapped. “Anything else you’d like to say?”
“Nope,” Declan grinned and turned to leave. He headed back to his office leaving Brian to clean up. By the time he finished, he was tired and worn out. He hadn’t meant to spend his morning like this.
That was what he was doing, though. He was spending his morning cleaning up spills and wishing that he was anywhere but here. He was in a funk, and he needed to break free.
“Don’t be an idiot,” he told himself, and he got to work.
BRIAN DIDN'T WANT TO talk to his brothers that afternoon. Not at all. He didn't exactly have much of a choice, considering the fact that they not only worked together, but that they owned a shared company.
Whether it was because they were triplets or because they were shifters, Brian didn't know, but his brothers seemed to realize that he was in something of a terrible mood just by looking at him. As
usual, Christopher was the one who called him out.
The three of them were gathered in Brian’s office going over some numbers when Christopher had finally had enough.
"What's your deal?" Christopher asked, crossing his arms over his chest. “It’s Friday afternoon and you have literally nothing planned this weekend, so what’s wrong?”
"Nothing."
"Leave him alone," Declan was the voice of reason.
For that, Brian was grateful.
"No, I won't leave him alone," Christopher said. "He's being a sourpuss."
"It's just been a long day," Brian said. That was putting it lightly. The dragon felt tired. Worn out. He felt the weight of the world bogging him down, and he didn't know what to do about it.
"It's always a long day," Christopher pointed out.
Brian looked at his brother. Christopher was...happy. He and Declan both were. In the past year, they had each found their mates, and they were truly content. Brian was happy for them.
Really, he was.
He was also wildly jealous, and that was a feeling that made him uncomfortable.
He wasn’t supposed to be jealous of his brothers.
He was supposed to look after them, take care of them. He was supposed to make them feel like they were safe and that he’d handle all of their problems. That was the kind of thing a big brother did.
Right?
"Look," he said, "I have a big meeting on Monday."
"Oh yeah," Christopher nodded, "with that reporter, right?"
"The writer, yes," Brian wasn’t really sure what to expect from the meeting, but he’d agreed to it, and he’d stick to his word.
"I thought she wrote for a tabloid."
"No." Brian was curt, but that was only because he didn't feel like explaining anything more to his siblings. Winter March was more than a reporter, and if she was half as hot as her voice, Brian knew he was in major trouble.
When she’d called to ask him if she could interview him for her newspaper, he’d been hesitant at first. Then he’d realized that not only did he not have anything to lose, but that meeting someone new could be fun and exciting. At the very least, they could flirt over lunch, he could answer her questions, and she could pull him from the eternal funk he seemed to be stuck in.
