When Wilson lost his family, he knew he would never be the same, and he hasn't. He's spent his time alone, lost, and wishing for something better. All of his energy goes into protecting the clan and planning to take down Lucky once and for all.
Reece is a broken man. He was stolen from his life, from his friends, from his job, and he's never really been the same. Months with Fablestone have done little to make him feel like a normal shifter. That is, until she comes.
Sabrina is something special, something magical, something unique, and she just might hold the secret to healing both Wilson and Reece.
With her help, they might be able to take down Lucky and stop the evil that threatens the future of shifters, but more importantly, she just might be their mate.
Prologue
From the end of DRAGON’S WHISPER.
Reece
SABRINA SPEAKS TO ME like I’m important.
Like I have value.
She doesn’t look at me like I’m damaged or broken. She doesn’t act like I have some disease I’m going to give her. Besides, the only disease I’ve ever carried is something that only affects shifters, apparently.
Not that this knowledge makes me feel any better.
“Talk to me about that day,” she says.
“We’ve already talked about this, Sabrina.”
“Humor me.” She crosses her legs and leans back a little, giving me that look I know so well. Shrinks, no matter how nice, are kind of all the same. They all think they’re going to be the ones to have this wonderful breakthrough about your life. They all think they’re going to be the ones who are able to change you, to fix you.
I don’t think she’s going to be able to do it.
I think I’m too far past saving.
“Ordinary day,” I begin, willing to do what she wants. If it means we get to keep talking and I don’t have to sit alone, I’ll do whatever she asks. Sabrina might report back to Cameron and Wilson to tell them what I say, but I don’t really care. I just need something to quench the never-ending loneliness that hammers at my soul one day at a time.
“What was the weather like?” She asks.
“Sunny,” I close my eyes, trying to remember. “And it smelled like burning leaves. Like someone had raked their lawn and was burning everything they gathered.”
“Did
you like the smell?”
“It was comforting,” I tell her. “I noticed it because I was walking to the bus stop.”
“Do you usually take the bus to work?”
She asks this like it’s still something I do, like when this session is over, I’m going to get to go back to my ordinary life. We both know that’s not true. We both know I’m never going back. Still, I appreciate her question because it makes me feel validated on some level. It reminds me that I’m not alone.
“I always take the bus,” I tell her.
“Who knows your daily routine?” Her voice is calm and slow, methodical. I know what she’s doing. She’s trying to get me to give her as much information as I can without losing sight of what matters. She needs to keep me talking so that I tell her as much as I can about the day I was taken.
Part of me is terrified and nervous.
I don’t want to talk about that day.
I don’t want to think about it.
That day was awful and terrifying. That day broke me. It was the first time I didn’t feel strong or masculine or brave. That day made me feel weaker than I’ve ever felt in my life and I never want to feel that weakness again.
“Reece,” she places her hand in mine, warming my skin with hers. “You are brave,” Sabrina whispers. “You can do this.”
“I can’t,” I whisper.
“You can,” she insists, and I open my eyes to see hers staring at mine. Then Sabrina reaches for my face and she cups it gently. “I believe in you, Reece, I believe in you.”
Somehow, when Sabrina whispers this to me, I believe it, too, if only just for a minute.
Chapter One
Sabrina
Magic.
That’s what every little girl dreams of, isn’t it?
Magical experiences.
We grow up thinking that adulthood is going to be this big, beautiful, incredible thing. We dare to imagine that our lives are going to be special, important, incredible. We think that somehow, despite all of the odds, we’ll be different. Our lives will be different.
They’ll be perfect.
“Magic doesn’t really exist,” I say confidently over my drink. The bartender looks at me, raising an eyebrow, but says nothing. I just stare at her until she shrugs and leans back against the opposite counter.
“I’m listening.”
“Do you agree?”
“Not at all,” she says. “Magic, in my opinion, is a very real and tangible thing.”
“I think you’ve worked in this place for too long.”
“We’ve only been open a week,” she says, laughing.
“I stand by what I said.”
I sip the whiskey. She served it to me exactly the way I like it: neat. Whiskey is the kind of drink you need to fully taste in order to totally enjoy it. Mixers only ruin the flavor.
“Why don’t you believe in magic?” She asks, and I smile a little. Karen-the-bartender is the type of person who has to be right, and she’s the type of person who has to know what everyone is thinking. She can’t handle not knowing things, and that’s part of why she’s both an incredible and a terrible person to hang out with.
“Magic is usually something people use as a label.”
“A label?”
“For when they succeed or fail,” I tell her. “If someone does a good job at something, it’s like it was magic. If someone fails horribly, oh, that was just bad magic.”
“Is it time for me to cut you off?” She asks, gesturing toward my drink. “Because I will cut you off.”
“No,” I shake my head. “I’m fine.”
“Suit yourself,” Karen says. Another patron comes into the empty bar and I turn to look. The familiar swagger instantly hits me right in the heart because I know this man. I know him better than he knows himself. I know so much about him and it takes all of my energy not to push him back and climb on his cock whenever I see him.
Reece is the hottest man in Fablestone.
Well, aside from the clan leader.
Together, they’re doubly sexy, and I’ve gone through three different vibrators in the time I’ve been living among the dragons just trying to keep up with all of the dirty fantasies I have featuring the two male shifters.
It’s ridiculous.
Reece spots me instantly and smiles. Then he comes over toward me. It’s not like it’s a big bar. It’s pretty small, in fact. It’s literally the only place to drink in Fablestone and with that sort of draw, it’s no wonder that people here really love coming in. It’s always a little busy, but there’s also always plenty of room if you just want to drink alone.
Karen looks from me to Reece and back again.
“Friend of yours?” She asks.
“Something like that.”
“Patient?” She knows I’m a shrink. Everyone around here knows that. Fablestone isn’t that big of a place. It’s not a place you can go and blend in. You can’t come to this clan and expect that you’ll just sort of be able to remain invisible. It doesn’t work that way and we all know it.
I shrug. The rules of doctor-patient confidentiality are tricky when it comes to shifters. There aren’t really laws in place to protect shifters the same way there are policies that cover humans for cases like this, but I still try to give all of my patients the same level of respect. I want them to know that I care about them. I care about their well-being. I want them to feel like they can talk to me about anything without me sharing that information with anyone else.
No matter how cute the lady bartender might be.
She laughs and goes to make a drink. Reece approaches and stands beside me. It’s not awkward. Of course, it’s not awkward. There’s this tension between the two of us that’s been blossoming. I’ve never been attracted to a patient before, so I don’t really know what to do with him.
I don’t know what to do about this.
I don’t know what to do about the fact that I want to push him down, strip off his clothes, and ride his cock.
That’s what I want.
More than anything else at this very moment, I want to own him, to tease him, to possess him.
“Reece,” I say.
“Doctor.”
“It’s Sabrina out here,” I say.
“Sabrina.”
“Have a seat,” I gesture to the stool beside me and he sits down. I’m not usually a dominant person and I’m not particularly bossy. I’m a self-proclaimed switch. Sometimes when I’m in bed with someone, I need them to top me. I need them to take control and make the decisions and tell me what to do and where to go and how to do it.
With Reece, though, I want to be the one taking care of him.
I want to serve him.
Worship him.
I want to make him come apart and then I want to put him back together again in a way that’s both beautiful and seductive.
I want it all.
Most of the time, I take what I want, but with Reece?
With Reece, things are complicated.
He looks at me and I can’t read the expression on his face at first. Surprise? Is he surprised to see me here? It kind of seems like he is.
“What are you doing here?” I ask him, turning the tables on him.
“Just came for a drink.”
“Funny,” I said. “I could have sworn you came for something else.”
I place my hand on his thigh, and for just a second, I don’t care how wrong this is. I don’t care how forward it is. I don’t care about any of that. For just a moment, all I care about is the fact that we’re both here, and this place is starting to look a lot like magic.
I could use some of that tonight.
Reece looks down at my hand and then back up to me. He raises an eyebrow, considering the gesture I’ve just made. Like it or not, I’ve made a very specific, very bold move. I’ve done something that will, like it or not, change everything between us.
“And what is it you think I came for?” He asks, lowering his voice. It’s
husky now. Heated. He’s aroused. A quick glance at his crotch shows me just how excited this conversation really is making him, but I don’t mind at all.
I don’t mind making Reece wiggle.
I just hope that soon, he’ll be doing it underneath me.
Perhaps the drinking has gone to my head because when I lean over and whisper in his ear, I know that I’m making a bad choice: a naughty choice. I know I’m doing something wrong, something terrible, but I can’t seem to stop myself. What I want is him. When I want it is right now. What I need is everything.
I need everything.
“I think you came here to kneel in front of me,” I tell him.
“Is that right?”
“Reece, I’m not wearing panties, and my pussy is so wet,” I tell him. My legs are crossed, but he glances at my skirt anyway. If I were to spread my legs, to open them, he’d see that I’m not lying. I’m being very honest.
“What are you doing to me, Sabrina?”
“I want you to lick me,” I tell him. “We can leave right now if you like, Reece. You just say the word.”
It’s up to him.
It’s his choice.
I’m not going to try to trick him into thinking I’m not interested because with Reece, I’m very interested. Is it a conflict of interest? Yep. Absolutely. It’s a total and complete conflict of interest, but I’m so past caring that it doesn’t matter. If I can get him to touch me, to play with me, to tease me, then I will be so very happy.
And for a little while, everything will be okay.
“I want to lose myself in you,” I tell him.
“Come with me,” he says.
He stands, dropping money on the counter. It’s enough to pay for my drinks and then some.
“A gentleman,” I say. “Thank you.”
“Have a good night, you two,” the bartender says, sweeping up the money.
“I think we will,” Reece says, looking at me. “I think we will have a very good night.”
He offers me his arm and I take it eagerly. We walk quickly to the door of the bar and then step outside into the chilly evening air. It’s brisk out, and a little nippy, but I don’t even care. We take maybe five steps from the door before I push him up against the side of the building and I cup his face.
